Sama X Starlink-Powered Connectivity, ICT Solutions and Value-Added Services for Oil, Gas and Mining Sites in the Gulf

Oil, gas and mining sites across the Gulf now run more sensors, cameras and remote support than ever. Drilling data flows to a team in another city, engineers join calls from head office, and control systems watch the plant around the clock. All of it needs a connection that holds, and these sites sit exactly where fiber does not reach. Sama X delivers that connection as a complete service: Starlink hardware from local stock, professional installation on site, Sama X Managed SD-WAN and 24/7 support in Arabic and English.

Why remote sites struggle to stay connected

Laying fiber across the desert, or out to a platform, costs too much and takes too long. Microwave needs towers and line of sight. Cellular runs out well before the gate. Traditional satellite fills the gap, but it orbits about 36,000 km up, so the round trip adds over +650 milliseconds of delay. That is fine for email. It is not fine for a live video call guiding a crew through a job, or a control system polling hundreds of sensors.

What Starlink changes

Starlink uses satellites in low Earth orbit, a few hundred kilometres up rather than 36,000 km. The lower orbit cuts the delay; the other benefits come from the network’s capacity and from how simple the kit is to deploy:

  • Low enough latency for live work. Remote desktop, voice, video and live supervision from a control room all become workable from a rig or a pit.
  • Enough bandwidth to stop rationing. A properly sized connection carries sensor data, safety cameras and crew internet at once, instead of forcing a choice between them.
  • Live in days, not months. A terminal, a mount, power and a router make a working network. No trenching, no cable permits, no waiting on a carrier build.
  • It moves when the work moves. Because the connection comes from satellite, the equipment travels with the rig, the pit or the vessel.

Starlink’s published speeds and latency vary by market and change over time, so confirm the current figures for your country .

Where it is used

Across energy and mining operations, the same use cases come up again and again: drilling and exploration data sent live to head office while the bit is still turning; offshore platforms and vessels running production data, diagnostics and safety cameras; mines using it for fleet management, autonomous haulage and survey data; and crew welfare, where a dedicated share of bandwidth for video calls home is a low-cost way to keep good people through long rotations.

Designing the site network

Treat the connection like any other part of your operational infrastructure: with redundancy, with traffic separated by priority, and with capacity sized against real usage.

  • Combine links, do not rely on one. Starlink alongside cellular, radio or existing VSAT, managed by Sama X Managed SD-WAN, sends control systems on the most reliable path and crew internet on the remaining capacity. If one link fails, traffic moves across automatically.
  • Size the data plan to real usage. Business plans include a monthly data allowance; when it runs out, the connection keeps working but slows sharply for the rest of the billing cycle. Top-ups are available to be added and restore full speeds.
  • Secure it as part of the OT network. Keep operational traffic separate from crew traffic, send site-to-office data over a VPN rather than the open internet, and limit who can reach the equipment.

Hardware for Gulf conditions

Heat, dust and salt air push equipment to the edge of its ratings, so terminal choice matters more here than in most regions. For oil, gas and mining sites, Sama X recommends the Starlink Performance kit: it is built for extreme conditions, with a wider operating temperature range and a higher ingress rating, and it is the kit we use for maritime and all offshore installations. Other Starlink kits are designed for less demanding conditions and are not recommended for exposed sites like these. Getting mounting, cabling and power right during the site survey costs far less than fixing it later at a location a day’s drive away. Specifications are published by Starlink and subject to change. How Sama X helps

As an authorized Starlink reseller across its Middle East markets, Sama X provides Starlink for energy and mining, maritime, construction, public sector and other remote operations, with connectivity built around how these sites actually run. Beyond the Starlink link itself, Sama X delivers complete ICT solutions: site assessment and terminal selection, Sama X Managed SD-WAN with automatic failover, integration with enterprise VPNs and firewalls, static IP options, pooled data across multiple sites, and data plan design with usage monitoring in the customer portal. Local teams support in Arabic and English and attend site when the location is a day’s travel from the nearest city, and Sama X confirms the licensing position for each site and use case before deployment.

Frequently asked questions

Is Starlink suitable for oil and gas operations?

Yes. It is widely used for operational data, remote support, video monitoring and crew internet, and works best as one link in a managed setup with backup.

Can Starlink be used offshore?

Yes. Global Business plans cover use at sea and in motion; Business plans are limited to one country, so confirm the plan and licence during design.

How quickly can a remote site be connected?

Usually in days rather than weeks or months, once the hardware, plan, licensing and site access are in place.
